Launch of a major conservation effort in the Gishwati-Mukura region
The Rwandan Minister of the Environment, Dr. Vincent Biruta, announced the launch of a Rwf 3.5 billion project funded from the Nordic Development Fund to improve the management of woodlots and increase the efficiency of charcoal production in the Gishwati-Mukura landscape. This initial effort is tied to a longer-term goal of shifting local residents away from the use of charcoal for fuel to the use of cheaper, more efficient, and less polluting gas options.
